Women In Science
 

Title: Women in Science

Purpose:

  • to determine conceptions about women in science
  • to determine the relation of field of study, time period, socio~cultural factors, and number of women in science
  • to practice organizing data
  • to practice graphing data

Materials:

Procedure:

  • Prepare a data chart with the following headings: name, dates, field of study, socio~cultural factors
  • Fill in the chart with information from Extraordinary Women Scientists by Darlene R. Stille
  • Prepare bar graphs representing the data:
    • Field of Study (x) vs Number of Women (y)
    • Time Period (x) vs Number of Women (y)
    • Other....you decide!!!

Results:

  • Data charts and graphs

Discussion:

    1. State your overall impression about the relation of field of study, time period, socio~cultural factors, and number of women in science.
      • Suppot this by answering the following questions
      • Which field has the most women
      • Which field has the least
      • Which time period has the most women represented
      • etc.....
      • How might the data be affected by the author of the book?

Conclusion:

  • (A one sentence testable statement that follows from your results, what you did, what you observed)
  • For this activity use the following format:
    The number of women in science is .............than in..............

Reflection:

  • (A personal statement about the activity, whether it relates to "real life," whether you liked it, suggested improvements.....)
