Chapter Objectives:

  • Describe the structure of crystals.

  • Distinguish between an elastic material and an inelastic material, and describe Hooke's law.
  • Explain why the center of a horizontal steel girder need not be as wide as the top and bottom.
  • Describe the relationship among linear growth, surface area growth, and volumetric growth.
